NOVEMBER 2013

WORSHIP IN PINK- ANOTHER SUCCESSFUL YEAR!

Our 2013 Worship in Pink Week saw thousands of Coastal Georgia residents sharing life saving breast health information within their congregations.   This year, seventy-four organizations registered for Worship in Pink, and over 15,000 people celebrated the message that early detection saves lives! Organizations planned engaging, education-driven events throughout the month of October, including community health fairs, lunch and learns, concerts and Pink Sundays.  Several other congregations invited Komen Coastal Georgia speakers to educate their members. We would like to thank all Worship in Pink participants for another successful year, and we are looking forward to a bigger and better Worship in Pink 2014!

GIVING BACK AND GIVING THANKS!

Juliette Rutledge, a Komen Coastal Georgia volunteer since August of 2013, has been donating her time to local non-profit organizations for most of her adult life. Although she has been a community activist for over 21 years, Juliette’s decision to become a Komen Coastal Georgia volunteer was driven by her desire to give back to the organization that helped her in her time of need.

In the summer of 2013, Juliette had pain in her breast that concerned her; however, she didn’t have insurance and didn’t know if she could afford a mammogram. Thankfully, Juliette reached out to the Komen Coastal Georgia office.  She was directed to an organization with Komen-funded breast health services that saw her right away.   Sadly, Juliette was diagnosed with breast cancer and is currently undergoing treatment, but she remains thankful to Komen for their help in getting her into her mammogram and diagnostic.  She can be overhead telling other volunteers that she doesn’t know what would have become of her otherwise.  So, Juliette remains committed to giving back to Komen Coastal Georgia and the community which so graciously supports Komen’s mission.

While Juliette is thankful to Komen Coastal Georgia and its partnerships with local organizations, we at the Komen office are thankful to have the support of wonderful volunteers like Juliette. Sign up to Volunteer today!

SURVIVOR OF THE MONTH- HENRIETTA TAYLOR

"...Continue to smile, laugh, love, and pray.”

By: Robert McNamara

Sometimes the most difficult stories to tell are the ones that are the most important for others to hear.  The story of November’s Survivor of the Month, Henrietta Taylor, is one that in some ways shares similarities to the stories of many other survivors.  Her story is one of grueling treatment regimens and painful complications.  Her journey, like that of many survivors, is the story of the scars that have healed and the ones that she still carries with her to this day.  Yet in other ways, Henrietta’s experience has been unique from any others.  Read more of Henrietta's story.
